Luka Modric final game Real Madrid |
Veteran midfielder Luka Modric will officially leave Real Madrid at the end of the 2023-24 season, marking the conclusion of a legendary 13-year spell with the club. Despite reportedly agreeing to accept a limited role, Los Blancos have opted not to renew his contract—a decision rooted in the club’s long-term strategy.
🧠 Real Madrid's Strategic Shift: Youth Over Experience
According to a report from AS (via Madrid Universal), Real Madrid is focusing on rejuvenating its midfield by investing in younger talent. With the emergence of Arda Güler, Nico Paz, and a potential marquee signing this summer, the club believes that continuing with Modric could slow down the development of the new midfield generation.
Although the Croatian icon expressed his willingness to embrace a reduced role next season, Real Madrid informed him on May 22 that there would be no place for him in the 2024-25 squad.
⚽ Luka Modric's Contributions to Real Madrid
Modric joined Real Madrid in 2012 from Tottenham Hotspur and has since become a central figure in the club's golden era. Over nearly 600 appearances in all competitions, he has registered:
-
⚽ 43 goals
-
🎯 95 assists
-
🏆 28 trophies, including:
-
6 UEFA Champions League titles (record)
-
4 La Liga championships
-
Even in the current season, Modric featured in 55 matches, starting 26, and contributing 4 goals and 9 assists. Yet, the push toward a younger squad ultimately outweighed his consistent performance and leadership.
📅 Modric’s Final Matches for Real Madrid
Modric is expected to play his last La Liga game for Real Madrid against Real Sociedad on Saturday, followed by a final appearance at the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States this June.
💬 Luka Modric Shares Emotional Farewell Message
Ahead of his last match at the Santiago Bernabéu, the 2018 Ballon d’Or winner penned a touching farewell to Madridistas on Instagram:
“The moment has arrived. The moment I never wanted to come, but that's football, and in life, everything has a beginning and an end.
I arrived in 2012 with the hope of wearing the jersey of the best team in the world and the ambition to do great things, but I couldn’t have imagined what came next.
Playing for Real Madrid changed my life as a footballer and as a person. I’m proud to have been part of one of the most successful eras of the best club in history.”
Modric has provided assists in his last two La Liga appearances and hopes to deliver one final magical moment before saying goodbye.
